Best Fonts For Astigmatism

I recently received an interesting e-mail:

Since I just read the topic about asigmatism in your forum, i am interested in designing the suitable font for them in need. However, i do not suffer asigmatism so i do not have the clue to build the most suitable font. Is the font needs to be bolder or sharper? Or is there any other advice so i can make the right font? I need advice from expertise in asigmatism and i believe you are the right person that i am looking for.

I am generally dismissive of the subject of best fonts for astigmatism, mostly not because it does not matter, but rather because I’m old. At least in the way that I still think of books, and fonts as a given, rather than something we can change at will (also, I don’t quite dare to think of changing fonts, for it will probably break my computer forever).

Our brain also does not actually read text letter for letter. Rather, we have memorized the picture for every word, which enables us to read so quickly, relative to the volume of letters. As long as the font is legible enough to enable our brains to match the image, font specifics are not of entirely notable significance.

I do have to concede though that this is a valid subject, even if you find me dodging it consistently.

If you have opinions on the matter of fonts for astigmatism, and ones you may prefer if you still notice some symptoms from your astigmatism while reading (since our differential prescription is astigmatism correction free), do share your thoughts in the forum.

We may yet come up with some interesting font preferences, and if you really want, we can even have a completely custom font, which we may claim to be the world’s most astigmatism friendly font choice.

Of course, this would be questionable marketing hyperbole, but it may still add some discussion to the subject, and thereby awareness to the whole matter of myopia.
